James Island carts lead double lives. Monday through Friday they are neighborhood vehicles, rolling Riverland Terrace to the Terrace Theater block or cutting through the streets off Camp Road. Come the weekend they point down Folly Road, cross the causeway over the marsh, and spend the day being Folly Beach carts, then come home carrying the sand and salt to prove it.
That commute is the story. The causeway stretch past the Folly River puts carts in marsh air both ways, brackish spray when the wind chops the river, and the beach day itself delivers everything we describe on the Folly page. But unlike a cart that lives on Folly, a James Island cart then parks in a shadier, damper yard under oak canopy, where sand-damp mats and seats dry slowly. Beach exposure plus slow drying is the exact mildew formula, and it is why James Island interiors smell like Folly interiors even though the ocean is a bridge away.
The island's yards add their own layer: heavy spring pollen off the oaks and pines, sap over anything parked under the canopy near the county park, and the red-brown dust that long gravel drives off Riverland contribute. Our typical James Island prescription is a seasonal rhythm, deep interior work after the summer beach season and a decontaminating exterior detail in pollen season, with rinses in between for the carts that run the causeway every weekend.
Getting to you
We cover the whole island, Harbor View Road around to Riverland, with no trip charge, and Folly Road addresses are on the same route as our Folly Beach visits, which makes shared-day scheduling easy. Is the causeway spray really worth worrying about?
Over a season of weekends, yes. Brackish water is still salt water, and it lands on the underside and frame, the part nobody hoses off. The undercarriage rinse in The Detail exists for exactly this run.
My cart stays on James. Do I need the beach-level schedule?
No. A never-crosses-the-causeway cart here can run the inland rhythm: a couple of Details a year and pollen-season attention. The heavier schedule is for the weekend beach commuters.
Can you come to the Riverland Terrace side?
All of it, including the tight older driveways under the oaks. The van needs a parking spot, not a hookup, so historic-lot logistics do not bother us.
