Golf Cart Ceramic Coating in Charleston
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds chemically with your cart's paint and cures into a hard, glass-like layer. Once cured, salt spray, UV, bird droppings, and pluff mud sit on the coating instead of the paint. Rinse them off and they are gone. Nothing has touched the finish underneath.
On a car that sleeps in a garage, coating is a nice-to-have. On a golf cart that lives outside on Isle of Palms or Kiawah, it changes the math. Uncoated paint out here starts chalking in a season or two, and correction to bring it back runs $349 a visit. A coating stops that cycle for about two years per application.
We apply a professional-grade coating, not the consumer spray bottles sold next to the car wax. The difference is hardness, thickness, and how it is applied: full paint correction first, panel wipe with isopropyl to strip every trace of polish oil, then the coating laid down panel by panel and leveled before it flashes. Rushing any of those steps is how coatings fail, which is why this service takes a full day and why we ask for a phone call before booking it.
Who this is for
Coating makes sense for a cart that lives outside near salt water and that you plan to keep. If your Club Car or ICON sits under a beach house on stilts and takes spray every time the wind comes out of the east, this is the one service that changes what next summer does to it.
It makes less sense for a garaged cart used a few weekends a year, or a cart you plan to sell this season. For those we will tell you plainly: get the Full Restore, take the six-month sealant, and keep the difference.
How long it takes
A full day at your home, weather dependent. The coating needs a dry cart, shade or a canopy, and a few hours without rain after application. We watch the radar and will move the appointment rather than coat in the wrong conditions.
What it costs
From $599 for a 4-passenger cart, which includes the complete Full Restore prep. Six-passenger carts add $40, lifted carts with oversized tires add $25, and paint that needs more than single-stage correction is quoted after we see it.
Compare that against correction every year or two at $349, and the coating usually pays for itself before it wears out.
Fair questions
How long does a ceramic coating last on a golf cart?
About two years on a coastal cart with basic care, meaning a rinse after heavy salt exposure and a proper wash now and then. Garaged carts can see three. The coating wears out from UV and abrasion, not time, so a cart parked in full sun on Sullivan's Island sits at the short end of that range.
Can you coat a cart that already has oxidation?
Yes, and that is most of the carts we coat. Correction and oxidation removal are built into this service. The coating locks in whatever finish is underneath it, which is exactly why we will not skip the prep.
Is ceramic coating worth it on an older cart?
Depends on the paint, not the age. A 2012 E-Z-GO with sound paint corrects and coats beautifully. If the clear coat is failing or panels are cracked, we will tell you at inspection and suggest the Full Restore instead so you are not sealing in a problem.
Do I still need to wash a coated cart?
Yes, just far less often and far more easily. Salt and grime release with a garden hose instead of a scrub. A monthly rinse or our quarterly maintenance plan keeps the coating doing its job.
